Pregnancy scans — 2D and 3D sonography

Which scan happens when, and what each one is actually looking at.

A scan is a look at how the baby is growing and whether everything is where it should be. Most scans find nothing that needs acting on. We will tell you what we are looking at while we are looking at it.

The scans across a pregnancy

An early scan confirms the pregnancy and the dates. The anomaly scan at around 18 to 22 weeks is the detailed one, looking at the baby's structure. Growth scans later on check size and wellbeing. Additional scans are done only when there is a reason, which we will explain at the time.

3D imaging is used where it adds something clinically — a clearer view of a particular structure. It is not a keepsake service and we do not sell it as one.

What we cannot tell you

We do not determine the sex of the foetus. Not at any stage, by any technique, for any patient, at any price. It is a criminal offence under the PC&PNDT Act, 1994, carrying imprisonment, and it applies to the sonographer as much as to the hospital.

Please do not ask the sonographer during the scan. It puts a member of staff in a very difficult position and the answer will always be no.

Questions we are asked most

Are scans safe for the baby?

Ultrasound has been used in pregnancy for decades and is considered safe. We still only scan when there is a reason to, which is why we do not offer scans as a souvenir.

Can I bring my husband or mother in?

Yes, for most scans. For the detailed anomaly scan the sonographer may ask for quiet for part of it, simply because it needs concentration.

What if the scan finds something?

You are told the same day, in person, by a consultant — not left to read it off a report. If a further test or a second opinion is needed we arrange it before you leave.
