Fibroids are very common and a great many of them never need treating at all. What matters is not that a scan found one, but whether it is causing you a problem — and where exactly it sits.
When treatment is worth it
Fibroids are worth treating when they cause heavy bleeding, pressure or pain, or when they are distorting the cavity of the uterus and affecting fertility or pregnancy. Size on its own matters less than people expect; position matters more.
A fibroid found incidentally on a scan, causing no symptoms, often needs nothing but keeping an eye on. We would rather tell you that than operate.
The options
Depending on your symptoms, your age and whether you want children, the options range from medicines to control bleeding, through removing the fibroids while keeping the uterus, to hysterectomy. We will set out what each involves, what recovery looks like, and what happens if you choose to do nothing for now.
What it costs

Questions we are asked most
Do all fibroids have to be removed?
No, and most do not. If a fibroid is not causing symptoms and is not affecting the cavity, watching it is often the right answer.
Will I still be able to have children?
In many cases yes, and preserving that is a central part of the decision about which operation to do. Tell us at the outset if you want children — it changes the plan.
Do fibroids turn into cancer?
That is very rare. It is a common worry and worth raising so we can talk about your particular situation.
