Labiaplasty reduces or reshapes the labia minora, the inner lips of the vulva. There is wide natural variation in how this part of the body looks, and most of it needs no treatment. When it causes discomfort or distress, surgery is one option among several.
Why women consider it
Discomfort or rubbing when walking, exercising or cycling; irritation or difficulty with hygiene; pain during intercourse from the tissue itself; or unhappiness with appearance. All of these are valid reasons to see a doctor.
We will ask, gently, whether the wish comes from you or from pressure by someone else, because it matters to how satisfied women are afterwards. We generally advise waiting until adulthood.
The operation
Usually a day procedure. Excess tissue is removed or reshaped and closed with dissolving stitches. A reduction of the clitoral hood can be done at the same time if needed. Your surgeons explain which technique suits you, and why.
Recovery
Swelling and soreness for one to two weeks. No tampons, swimming or intercourse for about four to six weeks. You get written instructions and a review appointment.
Who performs it
Every procedure in this unit is performed at Pearl by Dr. Jigna Jasoliya and Dr. Hardik Vansjaliya together, with female staff present throughout.
Questions we are asked most
What are the risks?
Bleeding, infection, wound opening, scarring, change in sensation, asymmetry, removal of too much tissue (which cannot be reversed) and dissatisfaction with the result. It is a permanent change.
Are there alternatives?
Reassurance after examination, changes to clothing or exercise, and treatment of any irritation or skin condition. For some women these are enough.
Who should not have it?
Women who are pregnant, anyone with an active infection, and anyone being pushed into it by another person.
Will anyone else know why I came?
No. Consultations in this unit are private, your records are confidential, and the front desk books the visit as a gynaecology consultation. You do not have to explain your reason to anyone but the doctor.
