A first visit to a gynaecologist is daunting at any age and especially at fifteen. It is a conversation, not an examination — an internal examination is almost never needed in this age group and would never be done without explanation and consent.
What is worth bringing her in for
Periods that have not started by around sixteen, periods so heavy they interrupt school, pain that painkillers do not touch, or cycles that remain very irregular more than two years after they began.
"That is just how periods are" is advice a great many women were given and should not have been. Heavy bleeding and disabling pain are treatable.
How the visit runs
She can be seen with a parent, or alone with a parent waiting outside, whichever she prefers — and she will be asked, not told. A female attendant is present throughout.

Questions we are asked most
Will she be examined internally?
Almost certainly not. In this age group the diagnosis usually comes from the history, blood tests and an external scan. Nothing would be done without explaining it first and getting her agreement.
Can I stay in the room?
That is her choice and we will ask her. Many prefer a parent there; some prefer to talk alone for part of it. Both are normal.
