IMSI

Considered after repeated ICSI cycles with poor fertilisation.

IMSI is ICSI performed at much higher magnification, so the embryologist can look at the internal structure of each sperm before choosing one. It is considered in a narrow set of situations, not offered routinely.

Where it is considered

IMSI may be discussed where previous ICSI cycles have produced poor fertilisation or poor embryo development, or where sperm shape is severely abnormal. The evidence that it helps is not strong across the board, which is why we do not offer it as a standard upgrade.

If we suggest IMSI, we will explain exactly what in your history makes it worth considering. If you have been offered it elsewhere without such a reason, ask what that reason is.

What it costs

Questions we are asked most

Is IMSI better than ICSI?

Not in general. It is a more detailed way of selecting sperm, which appears to help in specific situations and not in others. It is not an upgrade everyone should buy.
