A small opening is made in the outer shell of the embryo shortly before transfer, to help it emerge and implant. It is used in selected situations, not routinely.
Where it is considered
Assisted hatching is generally discussed where the outer shell appears unusually thick, where previous transfers of good-quality embryos have not implanted, or with frozen and thawed embryos in some protocols.
As with every add-on on this site: if we suggest it, we will tell you what specifically in your case makes it worth doing.

Questions we are asked most
Should every embryo be hatched?
No. It is a procedure with a specific rationale in specific situations, not a general improvement to add to every transfer.
